Alex Gibney Takes on WikiLeaks in ‘We Steal Secrets’

We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks Alex Gibney

The Gotham premiere of Alex Gibney’s new doc, “We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks,” began with a May 8 cocktail party at Graydon Carter’s Beatrice Inn, where producer Marc Shmuger talked about the pic’s genesis.

“I became captivated by the story of WikiLeaks and Julian Assange when the story broke in 2010. Together, Alex and I were able to persuade Universal to finance it and Focus to distribute it,” said Shmuger.

A few years ago, Gibney won an Oscar for “Taxi to the Dark Side,” about torture practices of the U.S. government.

“It’s a wildly different story, but in both cases the story progresses in unpredictable ways. You just have to hang on tight,” said Gibney. “What’s interesting about the story of WikiLeaks is that it’s a mixed bag.”

Also on hand were Martin Bregman and John Leguizamo, who praised the doc, noting, “It’s a complicated subject because it talks about government secrets and information and a vigilante who is trying to keep them honest.”
